The
Lathe Wizard is our newest tool: a lathe attachment
which enables you to decorate your work with flutes,
reeds and spirals, or to produce square tenons on table
legs. Offered in a 20" model for minis or a
36" version for larger lathes, it is fully
adjustable and will fit most lathes with slotted beds.
And, once assembled and set up, it can be easily removed
and reinstalled.
The Wizard is essentially
a router table for your lathe. It consists of two parts:
a Basic Unit which allows you to cut straight flutes,
beads, splines and tenons, and a gear-drive Spiraling
Attachment for cutting spirals on your turnings in six
different pitches, right- and left-hand.
The Basic Unit is made up
of four threaded posts supporting two hardened rods upon
which is mounted a sliding Lexan™ router base with
¾" slots to accommodate a template guide. The
front rod is equipped with adjustable stop collars and
the router base has screws for centering the router.
Since the four uprights are threaded, the slider rods
can be moved up or down to handle different sized work
and to allow you to decorate tapered turnings. The
router can also be slid in and out on the base to
produce square tenons or polygons. A 24-hole index plate
and brass index stop arm are included with the Basic
Unit.
The accessory gear-drive
Spiraling Mechanism (inset photo,) equipped with a
reversing device, can be used to make both right- and
left-hand spirals of different pitches. The 20"
model utilizes a lead screw of 12 threads per inch and
the 36" unit has a 1 TPI lead screw. Three
different output sprockets with assorted timing belts
combine with two output shafts on the gear drive to
produce a total of six different pitches. A separate
indexing drive sprocket completes the attachment.

This attachment is simply a connecting rod between the
Lathe Wizard's gear box output and index plate. As the
gear turns, it causes the work to oscillate back and
forth producing a wavy line. Guilloche (gi-losh')
from the French "to decorate with lines,"
consists of interwoven curved lines and was a popular
motif in Art Deco ornamentation.
Note: Due to the
individualized nature of this product, you will need to
call to place your order.
